Does the Tools Recommended by Microsoft Really can Speed Up Your PC?

I was annoyed with my slow PC these days. Today, I surf in the internet and come across one article about how to speed up your PC in Microsoft’s official website. It recommends five steps to process.

1. Remove spyware, and help protect your computer from viruses
2. Free up disk space
3. Speed up access to data
4. Detect and repair disk errors
5. Learn about ReadyBoost
6. Upgrade to Windows 7

In the process, the writer suggests tools including Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, Error Checking Utility, A Spyware Program and Ready Boost. Upgrade to Windows 7 is improper for me and it is not what I wanted. And I have never used other tools except Disk CCleaner which helps me get the gunk out of my registry and temp files. Do the other tools work? I am not sure how well they will work, so I need your advices.

If you have any other opinions of what you use to quicken Windows running on your system, please let me know. I will be very pleasure to hear your reply.
